Model J, 2nd Catalog
A Tale of Two J's

I think the Model J intoduced in the second catalog is the epitome of tasteful design.  The forearm is ebony and the veneers go from natural to chartreuse, orange, and ebony, before ending with natural maple points, exactly the reverse of the typical Palmer forearm of the day.

These are some of the most sought after and famous Palmers. Many of the froearms were made by Gus Szamboti to palmer specifications. The example shown with the pearl dots and window is a typical Model J. The other example was a special order custom made for New York pro Dick Leonard. Dick didn't think a plastic window would stand up to the cold east coast winters, so he asked Palmer to make him one with a plain ebony butt. He used this as his 9 ball cue.  The Dick Leonard cue has the original Palmer leather wrap, a beautiful job with a 100% invisible seam. The leather has some nice grain to it which doesn't show up in the photos.  Did you know Gus Szamboti also did leather wraps for Palmer? I would like to thank Dick Leonard for helping me with research on this cue and Barry Szamboti for his contribution as well.
